The Becoming with Montelle Bee

IDENTITY, BOLDNESS & FREEDOM IN CHRIST

1. For those who don’t know you, who is Montelle? And what do you do?

I’m Montelle Bee, a daughter of God, newly-wed wife, speaker, mentor and influential voice. I’m passionate about sharing inspirational and educational content on the journey to becoming the woman God called us to be. I’ve dedicated the past 10 years to supporting purpose-driven women on their path to greatness. Through my online platforms, mentorship and workshops, I provide actionable steps to help women cultivate an intentional mindset that aligns with their life goals.

2. The theme of this month is on the becoming. When you hear this, what does it make you think of and what does it mean to you? How do you define it?

When I hear 'The Becoming', it fills me with an overwhelming peace and excitement. By definition, it’s the process of developing or evolving into something new. To me, it perfectly represents the blossoming into the Woman that God called us to be.

Our 'Becoming' highlights the beauty and significance of the journey itself, rather than a destination. When we adopt this ever-evolving perspective, we realise that every experience, milestone, revelation, and challenge is what completes the journey. It forces us to not focus on an outcome, but accept that we are a forever work-in-progress.

God uniquely designed our blueprint and purpose - so each of our journey’s will differ. The Lord tells us “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb”(Jeremiah 1:5). Which means He knew exactly how we’d Become.

In essence, 'The Becoming' is our willingness to surrender to God’s will for our lives, embracing the uncertainty with open arms and trusting that every step forward is guided by a loving father.

3. What has been your story of becoming? (Feel free to share to your personal story)

Before giving my life back to Christ, I based my identity on false truths. I experienced years of low self esteem, insecurities and depression due to seeking the validation of man, rather than God. My sense of belonging was found in what the world could offer me - relationships, career progression, material success. Ultimately, I believed that my works (or lack there of) defined who I am.

In 2021, whilst my worldly success was evident, deep down I was empty. It was at this point that the Lord encountered me and revealed to me that life without Him is meaningless. From that very moment, I have been on a journey of ‘Becoming’ to seek out God’s true intention for my life.

Although I only came to know the Lord just 3 years ago, I find comfort in knowing that God had already orchestrated my path. As Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.“ He intentionally created every part of my story. Therefore, I know that I am exactly where I need to be.

My journey has been a constant process of refinement and obedience. From stepping into womanhood, an entrepreneur, to now becoming a wife… Every milestone brings it’s own lessons, challenges and testimonies.

4. What was some of your biggest lessons on your own becoming journey?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on the path to becoming is that this process cannot be rushed. God’s timing is not our timing. And if you try to skip the steps, you’ll find yourself in a repetitive cycle rather than breakthrough. I used to always be in a rush to achieve faster results. However, I have now found peace in trusting that the Lord sets the pace.

Following from that, another lesson is to not compare the journey to someone else’s. God will move in our lives in unique ways. So there will never be a replica of your testimony or experience. Trying to catch up to somebody else’s path or success is pointless.

And finally, I’ve learned not everyone can come with you. Becoming the woman God has called you to be requires a boldness that may intimidate some. It’s not easy, but you have to fully depend on God’s promises to sustain and carry you through.

5. With the becoming there is a move from the old to who you are called to be. What do you need to know before embarking on this journey?

Moving from the old is to step away from the darkness into light. Without the wisdom and knowledge of what you’re up against, this journey will test you in ways unimaginable. I’m very much still on my own journey of stepping into all that God has called me to be. But a few things that are helping me:

  1. Knowing your identity in Christ - This is your only firm foundation. Without this, any attempts to move into the new will always be limited. “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 NLT. Affirming your identity in Christ must become a daily effort, or there’s a risk of doubt and double mindedness creeping in.

  2. Expect challenges - It’s inevitable that you will face challenges and resistance on your walk with God. Especially in the fallen world we live in. Accepting your call and stepping in the light goes against culture and the accepted narratives. You will be likely be confronted, tested and discouraged. But I believe this is how the Lord builds our character and prepares us for battle.

  3. Be willing to sacrifice - Old things must fade away. Including old beliefs, habits, friends and environments. However, not everything is “toxic”, so it can be painful when God removes us from things or people we love. The truth is that not everyone can go where you are going in this season. A separation will occur but know that you are moving into greater.

6. What are the biggest hurdles and obstacles to becoming the woman God has called you to be? How do you overcome those obstacles and stay committed to the process?

I believe the biggest hurdle is fully surrendering to God’s will and trusting Him wholeheartedly. As someone who experienced abandonment and rejection from a young age, I learned to be independent as a means of protection. Decision-making allowed me to feel safe and in control of my life. However, God tells us ”Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.“ Proverbs 3:5 NLT.

I overcome this is by staying close to God through His word. I remind myself of His promises throughout scripture and try to avoid creating my own understanding of my circumstances.

7. Any final advice?

I love this scripture in The Message bible, Ephesians 6:13-18. I believe this sums up perfectly our instruction to walk boldly on your path to Becoming.

“Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.”
